Dr. Priya Mistry graduated with honors from University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2007 and has been helping her patients smile with confidence since then.
Since meeting her mentor, Dr. Arthur L Parker, DMD, Dr. Mistry has been focusing on taking care of patients with TMJ/TMD, head and neck pain. She is fortunate to have received hands-on training from Dr. Parker, who has been treating patients with TMJ disorders for over 40 years!
Additionally, Dr. Mistry has received Diplomate status from the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, making her one of the few providers in the area who is qualified to effectively treat Sleep Apnea with Oral Appliance Therapy.
Dr. Mistry became active on Social Media - TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube - to increase awareness among patients and providers as to what TMJ/TMD conditions are, how to treat them, and how they relate to other parts of the body. These platforms have grown tremendously and have helped many viewers find relief from TMJD pain and dysfunction.
Dr. Mistry has also helped other dentists learn more about successful treatment of TMJD through webinars and courses that she designed and taught. Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Mistry truly loves this area and culture. On the weekends, you will find her exploring and staying active in the great outdoors with her husband and her two lovely children. She also likes to read, hike, and exercise.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD) is a broad term that encompasses problems within the jaw joints as well as the muscles that surround and support the jaw.
“TMJ” is not a diagnosis. It simply means “Temporomandibular Joints”
At our practice, problems within the joint are referred to as TMJ dysfunction.
This typically manifests as:
“TMD” stands for “Temporomandibular Disorder” or “Temporomandibular Dysfunction”. TMD recognizes that there’s a group of muscles that surround and support the jaw. These muscles can get trapped in a chronic pain/spasm cycle which can be incredibly painful!
Common TMD Signs and Symptoms:
Because the signs and symptoms that come along with TMD are so vast and varied, it is often called “the Great Imposter Disease” and can be difficult to diagnose. Many individuals have been on quite a journey before they get to our office! They’ve seen dentists, oral surgeons, ENTs, root canal specialists, neurologists and more!
Many patients come to our office with noises inside the jaw joints, episodes of locking, AND pain. Some present with only joint noises and locking. Others only have pain. Every combination of the signs and symptoms listed above is possible and more.
We are well versed in treating TMJ/TMD in a conservative fashion and with a 90% success rate!

Traditionally, orthotic therapy involved wearing a TMJ orthotic 24/7, even when eating for at least 3-4 months OR until symptoms resolved. Wearing the orthotic and bringing the muscles and jaw joints to health and function is considered Phase 1 TMJ/TMD treatment. In terms of symptoms, this means eliminating or drastically decreasing headaches, neck pain, jaw pain, ear pain, dizziness, tooth pain, gum pain, jaw joint noises, and/or jaw catching or locking.
Phase 1 treatment was traditionally done WITH the knowledge that the jaw would start to adapt to a different position – the position in which the orthotic was holding the jaw. This means that the bite would be drastically different at the end of orthotic wear than it was at the start of treatment. People would go into this treatment KNOWING they would need Phase 2 treatment - braces or full mouth reconstruction (crowns on every tooth) – afterwards to make their teeth (“bite”) come together again.
Dr. Mistry’s mentor – Dr. Arthur L. Parker – was able to find a way to do Phase 1 treatment for most patients without changing the bite and therefore, without needing Phase 2 treatment. Dr. Mistry celebrates a 90% success rate with Phase 1 TMJ/TMD treatment. Many of her patients do NOT have to move on to Phase 2 treatment as long as they continue to wear the nighttime orthotic indefinitely.
Phase 2 TMJ/TMD treatment involves moving the teeth to the stable and optimal jaw position found during Phase 1 treatment. This can be done with orthodontia (braces, Invisalign, etc) OR with full mouth reconstruction (crowns on every tooth).
Dr. Mistry does not provide Phase 2 TMJ/TMD treatment in her office simply because the vast majority of her patients do not need it. On behalf of her patients and for those who WANT Phase 2 treatment, Dr. Mistry works with local dentists and/or orthodontists to communicate the optimal jaw position. For Phase 2 TMJ/TMD treatment, the Phase 1 provider MUST work closely with the Phase 2 provider to achieve the best outcome for the patient.
In this video I go over my specific modality of treatment for TMJD and my success of treating this condition with just phase one.
This video is about Phase 1 TMJD Treatment and how it differs from Phase 2 TMJD Treatment. The differences are drastic and it's important to follow a sequential series of steps when it comes to treating TMJD in order to get the best results.
