Airway & Jaw Development for Kids (JFO)
Does your child snore, breathe through their mouth, or grind their teeth at night?
These are not just quirks – they can be early signs that the jaw isn’t growing the way it should. And the best time to guide that growth is between ages 4 and 8, long before most orthodontists will even take a look.
Jaw Functional Orthopedics (JFO) is a gentle, non-surgical way to help your child’s jaws, face, and airway develop properly – so they can breathe, chew, swallow, sleep, and speak the way nature intended.
Why Not Just Wait for Braces?
Most orthodontists wait until age 8 or later. Here’s why that can be a missed opportunity.
Traditional orthodontics waits for most of the permanent teeth to come in – usually around age 8 or older – and then straightens what’s already there. But by that age, the most significant period of jaw and facial growth has already passed.
JFO works differently. Instead of waiting, it works with your child’s natural growth during the years it happens most – guiding the jaws to develop to their full size and shape. That can mean more room for teeth, a more open airway, and in many cases, less need for aggressive orthodontics or extractions later.
The ideal window to begin is ages 4 to 8. Children up to age 12 – and even adults in certain cases – can still benefit when JFO is combined with other therapies.
What Is Jaw Functional Orthopedics?
Jaw Functional Orthopedics (JFO) is a functional and structural approach to how your child’s jaws, face, and bite develop. Rather than simply straightening teeth, JFO corrects the underlying structural imbalances that affect how the whole system works – and puts the emphasis on restoring function.
By guiding structure, JFO helps restore the everyday functions that depend on a well-developed jaw:
- Chewing – a balanced bite that works comfortably and efficiently
- Swallowing – correct tongue posture and swallowing patterns
- Breathing – improved nasal airflow and a more open airway
- Speech – the oral structure and muscle function that clear speech depends on
It uses lightweight, removable appliances that encourage proper growth and development of the jaws – helping them align naturally while reducing strain on the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and surrounding muscles.
The key principles of JFO
- Supports natural jaw growth and facial balance
- Restores proper function – chewing, swallowing, breathing, and speech
- Reduces strain on the temporomandibular joints (TMJs)
- Improves the airway and tongue posture
- Creates the structural foundation for a stable, healthy bite
Could Your Child Benefit?
Check the signs you've noticed in your child:
- Snores, or breathes loudly at night
- Breathes through the mouth (day or night)
- Grinds or clenches teeth
- Restless sleep, or still wets the bed
- Crowded, crooked, or gapped baby teeth
- Dark circles under the eyes, or seems tired despite enough sleep
- A narrow palate, recessed chin, or 'long face' appearance
- Picky eating, slow eating, or difficulty chewing
- Speech concerns, or a tongue / lip tie
- Frequent congestion, enlarged tonsils, or chronic stuffy nose
Checked two or more? – Your child may benefit from an evaluation. The earlier we look, the more we can guide growth naturally.
Why Healthy Jaw Development Matters
When the facial bones grow unevenly or the bite is imbalanced, the body compensates – and that can lead to pain, dysfunction, or changes in facial appearance over time. Underdeveloped jaws don’t just affect the smile; they can affect the airway, the neck and shoulders, sleep, and more.
Signs and problems JFO can address
- Jaw clicking, pain, or locking (TMJ)
- Crowded or crooked teeth and bite problems
- Mouth breathing and restricted airway
- Facial asymmetry or underdeveloped jaws
- Headaches, neck tension, or fatigue
- Tongue-thrusting or difficulty swallowing
How JFO helps
- Guides balanced development of the face and jaws
- Expands and guides the jaws before any orthodontic treatment
- Improves nasal airflow and tongue posture
- Aligns the joint and relieves muscle strain
- Reduces muscle overcompensation and restores function
By treating the cause rather than the symptoms, JFO helps set the stage for a healthy, comfortable future.
Who Can Benefit?
JFO is especially powerful for growing children, but it can also help adolescents and certain adults. Early intervention helps prevent future TMJ problems and supports natural, healthy growth.
Ideal candidates include children who:
- Show early signs of crowding or crossbite
- Mouth-breathe, or have chronic congestion or snoring
- Have facial asymmetry or underdeveloped jaws
- Experience early TMJ clicking, tension, or headaches
- Have tongue-thrusting or poor swallowing patterns
The ideal time to begin JFO is between ages 4 and 8. Children up to age 12 and adults can still benefit when functional therapy is combined with other TMJ and airway treatments.
This patient had headaches, jaw pain, and neck pain from the age of 4. Within one month of getting her JFO appliance from Dr. Kim, her pain was gone. She was able to get her lips together without her teeth getting in the way within 4 months and her head tilt corrected almost immediately. Dr. Kim is not just straightening teeth – he is growing faces and changing lives!

Meet Your Provider: Dr. Kyung Kim
When Dr. Kim’s own son was three years old and still struggling with sleep, Dr. Kim discovered a passion for airway and growth-focused dentistry – and a determination to help other families find answers sooner.
A Pacific Northwest native, Dr. Kim completed his undergraduate studies in Biology and Human Physiology at the University of Oregon before earning his dental degree at Oregon Health & Science University, where he first fell in love with caring for children. In 2021 he began studying Jaw Functional Orthopedics under his mentor, Dr. Patricia Valerio, who has more than 30 years of experience in the field. Dr. Kim is now pursuing a master’s degree in JFO and will be among the first dentists to earn this specialized credential.
Outside the office, Dr. Kim and his wife Jessie are raising four energetic sons – Theo, Lucas, Johnny, and Elijah – and love spending Pacific Northwest summers outdoors and winters skiing at Mount Hood.
Dr. Kim provides JFO care in collaboration with Dr. Priya Mistry at the TMJ Doc in Vancouver, WA.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is JFO uncomfortable for my child?
- Not at all. JFO uses light, gentle forces, and appliances are removable. Most children adapt within days.
- Isn’t my child too young? Our orthodontist said to wait.
- Many orthodontists wait until age 8 or later to straighten teeth. JFO is different – it guides growth during the years it happens most, which is why ages 4 to 8 are ideal. An evaluation is simple and tells you where your child stands.
- How long does treatment take?
- Typically 12 to 24 months, depending on the case and your child’s growth rate.
- Does JFO replace braces?
- Not necessarily. JFO builds the foundation; braces may follow to fine-tune alignment – and often less treatment is needed.
- Can adults do JFO?
- Yes – certain adult cases benefit, especially when combined with TMJ or airway therapies.
