Osteopathic Manual Jaw Manipulation
Osteopathic Manual Jaw Manipulation (OMJM) is a hands-on technique that Dr. Priya Mistry learned through intensive training with her mentor, Dr. Arthur Parker. Her technique is unique to her office! Dr. Mistry uses osteopathic manual jaw manipulation frequently with her patients suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ/TMD). Using subtle manual pressure to help realign jaw joint, this technique involves gentle stretches or manipulations inside the mouth.
How Does Osteopathic Manual Jaw Manipulation Help the Jaw Joints?
Osteopathic Manual Jaw Manipulation is a gentle yet effective technique that can help restore the mobility of the jaw and help improve alignment of the different structures of the jaw. This hands-on technique works by gently “gapping” or separating the two bony structures that form the jaw joint. “Gapping” allows the joint to reset comfortably. There is generally no pain involved during this gentle manipulation.
Advantages of Osteopathic Manual Jaw Manipulation (OMJM):
- Addresses structural alignment problems with the jaw joints.
- Increases circulation and other fluids like lymph, which encourage the body’s natural healing abilities.
- Soothes and relieves tight fascia, jaw muscles, and jaw joint stiffness.
- Improves jaw range of motion.
After Each Therapy Session:
- Drink plenty of water – this therapy sometimes releases toxins that are built up in the muscles. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water,, which helps flush toxins out of your muscles.
- Take a walk – While Dr. Mistry does not recommend a difficult workout session immediately following your therapy session, she does advise that you move your body gently by taking a walk if you’re feeling sluggish or fatigued. Walking also increases blood flow, which is helpful for recovery and healing.
- Watch what you eat –We advise that you eat foods that are easy to chew and avoid options like sandwiches or hamburgers that require you to open your mouth wide. Also avoid foods that are tough to chew or require a lot of chewing to breakdown - like steak or bagels.
