Invisalign is a popular orthodontic option to obtain straight teeth by using custom clear aligners instead of metal brackets and wires. Adults and teens opt for Invisalign because it is reportedly more comfortable and convenient compared to traditional metal braces and is hardly noticeable by others. But can you get Invisalign if you have Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ/TMD)? Dr. Mistry recommends addressing your TMJ Disorder first – and not with Invisalign – and here’s why.
Why You Should Hold off on Invisalign Treatment if You Have TMJ/TMD!
If Invisalign or braces are done while the muscles are inflamed and the jaw joints are dysfunctional, the pain and dysfunction can actually get worse! Dr. Mistry has seen this happen many times and many patients have had to pause Invisalign (or braces) to get the TMJ/TMD treated first. Bringing the muscles and joints to health and function must be done before moving the teeth to prevent pain/dysfunction from worsening!
How does Dr. Mistry treat TMJ/TMD? She uses sophisticated technology and her knowledge of your specific TMJ condition to determine the ideal jaw position. This position is called the “prescription”. Dr Mistry builds this prescription into custom TMJ orthotic, which she recommends wearing all day – except when eating – and all night. Dr. Mistry follows this up with frequent (every 2-4 weeks) therapy and orthotic adjustment appointments. Many of Dr. Mistry’s patients experience significant, if not complete relief within 7-9 months of treatment.
Once the TMJ symptoms resolve, Dr. Mistry will help you find an orthodontist who will move your teeth as close as possible to the position in which the orthotic holds your jaw.
What About Veneers or Other Cosmetic Dental Treatments?
Adults that want perfect teeth may consider a fast solution like veneers or other cosmetic dental treatments that achieve results in a matter of weeks. Dr. Mistry advises against undergoing extensive cosmetic treatments like a full smile makeover until you resolve your TMJ/TMD.
