Dr. Mistry has found that a skillfully made TMJ orthotic is very effective in treatment of TMJ Disorder (TMJ/TMD). A TMJ orthotic is a custom mouthpiece made from impressions and precise measurements of a very specific jaw position. To fabricate a TMJ orthotic, Dr. Mistry uses neuromuscular technology – which helps to find the most relaxed position (the correct resting length) for the muscles of the head, neck and jaw AND the position where the jaw joints are decompressed. Along with neuromuscular technology, she also uses CBCT imaging as well as her knowledge of the TMJ condition to find YOUR unique prescription. Dr. Mistry then builds this prescription into a TMJ orthotic. She has found that when the muscles are held in their correct resting length and the jaw joints are decompressed, her patients will begin to experience relief usually within a month! The jaw muscles that were once tense and painful become relaxed, inflammation is reduced, and pain subsides – wonderful, right?
How often do I wear my TMJ splint?
Most of Dr. Mistry’s patients receive one TMJ orthotic; some receive two! At the start of treatment, Dr. Mistry recommends wearing the orthotic 22/7 – taking it out only when eating or brushing/flossing. An important part of treatment includes frequent appoints during with Dr. Mistry performs her therapy protocol. As your symptoms improve, Dr. Mistry will recommend wearing the orthotic during the daytime less and less – until you are only wearing it at night.
